Near Miss
WHAT
IS A NEAR MISS?
"A Near Miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, damage or product loss but had
the potential to do so.". it is the definition which i read in the NEBOSH books and it is the most accurate as i believe.
The difference between a near
miss and a full blown incident is often a fraction of a second that may not be
there the next time.
Examples of Near Misses:
ü
Handrail
missing from a scaffold that persons are working on or about to work on.
ü
Floor
openings with no protection to prevent persons from falling
ü Vehicles reversing without a Banks man
ü
Objects
falling from height
ü
Trailing
leads or other trip hazards.
Near misses are warnings of
accidents in the making which should never be ignored, by accepting these warnings
and looking for their causes, we can prevent these situations from recurring.
Why
Should They Be Reported?
The prevention and elimination
of incidents can only be progressed by reporting near misses as they occur.
If near misses are not reported then no incident investigations will be carried out and none of the problems and warnings will be spotted.
At last the result of any learning points noticed cannot be communicated to others who will therefore still be at risk. .
A
near miss can be considered as an indication that something is wrong and it is
important that everyone is "warned” by each near miss that occurs so that
standards can be improved.
if we ignore near misses and the conditions which are an open invitation for an incident to occur. Do not shrug off the near misses because nothing happened, let's find out why they happened and put in place improvements to ensure that they do not happen again.
You can help us by reporting
near misses to your Supervisor or Engineer/Manager as they occur.
AN
UNREPORTED NEAR MISS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN!!
